Iceland is an expansive country with broad fields providing for relatively large populations of wild game. Migratory birds such as geese are a favorite game and have been hunted by people since the dawn of time. Ptarmigans, ducks, and seabirds are hunted, and so are reindeer. Ptarmigans are a traditional Christmas dish around the country, especially in the northern region.

In the past, hunting took place alongside regular farming and the catch was a welcomed addition to the crops and produce. Today, hunting them is a pastime, and the game is eaten on special occasions. Wild game feasts are held where tables almost collapse under the weight of lustrous dishes.
